The Van

My van belonged to the Scottish Ambulance Service. The home station was in Hawick. Hawick is a town in the Scottish Borders council area and historic county of Roxburghshire in the east Southern Uplands of Scotland. It is 10 miles south-west of Jedburgh and 8.9 miles south-south-east of Selkirk. As you can see, Scottish ambulances are white whereas English ambulances are yellow.

The call sign was HAW3455

Due to the heritage, my van is now named Scotty

Scotty is a Mercedes Sprinter 519 CDI 3.0L diesel manual. and first registered on 18/10/2016.

I bought Scotty in July 2024

My van on the outside has not changed much since I bought it. The “Ambulance battenburg” had already been removed as well as the emergency lights.

I have installed 3 x 405W solar panels on the roof and removed the middle communications antenna to fir a Maxair fan. The two outer antennas are used for the 5G/4G internet system.

All the rest of the work has been done on the inside and I will update the website later with photos and videos of the build so far as it is not finished but a living work in progress.

Electrical System

Below is a diagram of what I have installed in my van for the electrical system.

The 400w single solar panel can be switched to an MPPT controller to charge up the engine battery. I have also connected one of the Ambulance battery chargers to my mains inverter output to be able to charge up the engine battery if required.
